Mt. Vesuvius is dormant volcano located near Naples, Italy and one of the world's most dangerous. It has become famous because it's violent eruption in 79 A.D. that completely decimated the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Mt. Vesuvius - A Mystery!Our mini-mystery unit will connect to the grade 7 science curriculum, Planet Earth, and in this unit we will focus more specifically on the town of Herculaneum and it's inhabitants at that time. Little was known about this town and it's people until recently, whereas Pompeii is very well known for it's people casts of those who perished from Vesuvius's mighty blast.
By reading and examining the book "The Secrets of Vesuvius" by Sara Bisel, we will be asking these main questions: Were there survivors from Herculaneum? If not, where are all the remains of the lives lost? When will the next eruption of Mt. Vesuvius happen? How does a volcano erupt and can you predict it? How destructive can Mt. Vesuvius become and how are surrounding cities handling it's looming presence? |
