Contractions - a word formed by joining two words together. An apostrophe shows where a letter or letters have been left out. - Examples: It is = it's, I am = I'm, do not = don't Compound words - a word that is made up of two or more words. The meaning of a compound word is related to the meaning of each individual word. They can be written as one word, or as hyphenated words, or as two separate words. - Example: sun + glasses = sunglasses, meaning "glasses to wear in the sun", out-patient, high school. Connotations and Denotations Denotations are the dictionary meaning of words. Connotations are how words are interpreted through tone, context, and feeling. Words can have a positive or negative connotation depending on how they are used. Idioms - common expressions that are not literal. - common phrases whose meaning is not real. - Example: "It's raining cats and dogs!" "He blew his top!" "I'm going to hit the hay" |
